Point of care charting

Many of the devices used to capture, record and access electronic records in a medical/surgical unit were developed for other uses. Unfortunately, these devices do not adequately account for the multitasking, multi-user, mobile, fast-paced work circumstances of today's hospitals. This is especially the case with charting at the bedside, or point-of-care. This mismatch results in poor performance and often outright rejection by practitioners. In this project, a number of existing devices and components are being explored to improve charting. On-site interviews and observations establish current practice and create a model of information flow. These data are used to develop and evaluate a variety of alternatives and processes. These solutions will be tested in simulated environments at first, with subsequent testing on the floor.
