Knowledge management, pervasive computing and activity settings

In a hospital setting work is distributed among many mobile, multitasking practitioners. Pervasive computing, commonly used to support the modern knowledge worker, is now finding application in hospitals. It is a computing infrastructure that: provides access to a dynamic range of computing and software devices; enables users to shift between devices; and allows mobile users to seamlessly preserve their cognitive and informational working environment. The technology infrastructure is part of the larger physical architecture designed to support work wherever it occurs. Knowledge management - which integrates technology, process and the individual - provides a useful framework for the overall design of information systems. This interdisciplinary effort explores the design principles for creating environments that optimally support the knowledge, process and ergonomic needs of hospital workers.
